Crackles and dropouts

Raise the buffer one step, use the ASIO driver and close what competes for the audio.

Crackles almost always mean the buffer is too small for the computer.

  1. Open Settings › Devices › Audio interface › Open.
  2. Under Buffer, the title shows the current size and the latency in ms. Pick the next larger value.
  3. Play again. Still crackling? Go up one more step.

A bigger buffer means more delay between key and sound: keep the smallest one that does not crackle. The values are the ones your interface’s driver offers.

  • Use your interface’s ASIO driver: it gives the lowest latency.
  • Close other audio programs. If another program is using the ASIO driver, REDKEYS tells you which (… is in use by …).
