Layers and splits

Put up to 8 sounds in a channel, each in its own key range and velocity range.

A channel can hold up to 8 sounds, called layers. With them you stack a pad on the piano, split the keyboard between bass and piano, or put a sound only on the hard notes.

Add a layer

  1. Tap Edit on the channel and stay on the Sounds tab.
  2. Under the layers, choose one of the three buttons (the counter next to them shows, for example, 2/8):
+ Layer: the new sound plays on top, over the same key range.
+ Split: splits the keyboard at C4. The new sound takes A0 to B3, and the existing one plays from C4 up.
+ Add: the new sound covers the whole keyboard.
  3. Pick the sound from the list.

The new layer plays only in the part you are in. In other parts, turn it on whenever you want with Plays here.

What each layer has

On screenWhat it does
Plays here / Off hereTurns the layer on or off in the current part.
Edit ›Opens the sound page.
×Removes the layer from the song (two taps).
KEY RANGEThe lowest and highest note the layer plays, and the Learn button.
VELOCITYThe lowest and highest velocity (1 to 127).
OCTAVEMoves the layer up or down in octaves (−4 to +4).
VOLUME and PANThe layer’s level and pan.

You can drag the values or type them.

Set the key range with Learn

  1. In KEY RANGE, tap Learn. The button now reads Lowest key….
  2. Play the lowest note of the range on your keyboard.
  3. The button now reads Highest key…. Play the highest note.
  4. Done: the range is set. The order of the two keys does not matter.

Velocity range

With VELOCITY a sound plays only on soft notes or only on hard ones. Example: a piano from 1 to 127 and a pad from 100 to 127 — the pad comes in only when you play hard.

Splits on screen (Desktop and Tablet)

The coloured bars above the on-screen keyboard show each channel’s layers. Tap them to open the SPLITS · THIS SONG window: there you see every channel together, drag the ends of each range (or the whole range), change the octave and use Learn. Close splits closes it.

Remove a layer

Tap the layer’s × and tap again to confirm. It leaves the whole song, not just the part. To take it out of one part only, use Off here.
