Live sound tips

Use effects on stage without cutting tails, adding delay or loading the computer.

  • Change the space per part. Store the reverb's and delay's Dry/Wet or on/off in each part with Store. On the change, the tail already ringing dies away in its own time: no hard cut.
  • Turn off what you do not use. An effect that is off stops processing as soon as its tail ends, freeing up the computer.
  • Watch what adds delay. The Compressor's Lookahead (1 or 10 ms) and the Limiter's (1.5 to 6 ms) delay that channel's sound. The EQ adds no delay.
  • A Limiter on the Master protects the PA. It is not there by default: put it in a Master slot and keep the Ceiling just below 0 dB.
  • Parallel compression. On the Compressor, bring Dry/Wet below 100: the original sound comes back under the compressed one.
  • A subtler EQ in one move. The EQ's Scale lowers or raises all bands together.
  • Keep what worked. Save the setting that worked in Mine and use it in other songs.
