Voices, pedal and polyphony
Understand how many notes sound together and what the app does with the pedal and repeated notes.
REDKEYS plays up to 512 voices on a computer, shared by all channels. There is nothing to set up: the app manages the voices so the sound does not stutter.
When the processor is under pressure
The app keeps measuring how many voices your computer can handle. Beyond that, it first lets go of the voices you will miss least (the quietest tails and the old notes only the pedal is holding) instead of crackling. The keys your hand is holding are the last to go.
Measured on an ordinary laptop: 128 notes held on the pedal, none late, using about 30 % of one processor core.
The sustain pedal
- Re-pedal: lift the pedal and press it again while the notes are still fading, and they are held again, from the level they were at.
- Notes held only by the pedal: each sound holds up to 32. Beyond that, the oldest fade away in their natural release, like a key let go without the pedal. Notes your hand is holding never go because of this.
Repeating a note under the pedal
| Sounds | Playing again a note the pedal is holding |
|---|---|
| Pianos, strings, synths and World Session | It strikes again, as on the real instrument. The previous note keeps sounding for a moment and fades in its own natural release |
| Pads and arps | The note already sounding carries on; the app does not double the same note |
Poly, Mono and Glide
On the Sound tab, the Voice card picks Poly or Mono, and the Glide knob makes notes slide. In a glide, the note leaving and the note arriving cross on the way, with no jump. See The Sound tab.
